As believers in Jesus Christ come to understand our own adoption into the kingdom of God, we discover a God of limitless grace and love who paid the ultimate price to be able to call us sons and daughters.
I was marred in my sin. I was disabled and imperfect. I had diseases. I was abandoned. I was alone. I was "unadoptable." But God chose me. He chose me to be His daughter, to receive a legacy and an inheritance I did not deserve, and to live a life of hope and faith in a kingdom that has come but is yet still to come.
When we come to understand our own vertical adoption (adoption of men and women by God), we come to understand the calling of horizontal adoption (adoption of orphaned children by those called to be adoptive parents). In our world today there are somewhere between 150-160 million orphans. Almost 20 million children have lost one or both parents due to AIDS, with another child becoming an AIDS orphan every 15 seconds.
What is true for these children is true for every child--every child deserves a family.
Although 160 million orphans seems a staggering and insurmountable statistic, it only takes 7% of professing Christians worldwide to overcome this number and provide a family for every child. Clearly, every Christian is not called to adopt, but there are many who are called to adopt who need to be challenged.
My challenge to you is to begin praying and to ask God if He is calling you and your family to adopt.
If you think He might be, I encourage you to seek out information and resources to help inform your journey. Adoption it is a difficult journey, but for those who are called, one worth walking.
Below is a list of resources I have found helpful in my own adoption journey and I hope will help you in yours.
